A step by step crafting guide

Origami butterflies are a beautiful and calming paper craft that can be made with very few materials. They are perfect for decorating greeting cards, gift wrapping, wall displays, spring garlands, or simply enjoying as a relaxing creative activity. This is a lovely project for beginners because it is easy to learn and gives a charming result.

Here is a step by step guide to making your own simple origami butterfly.

Materials You Will Need

Square piece of paper
A flat surface to work on
Optional, coloured pens, glitter, stickers, or string for decoration

You can use origami paper if you have it, but any paper cut into a square shape will work well. Patterned paper can create especially pretty butterflies.

Recommended Tips:

These coloured pens are washable, so they're great for kids: Washable Coloured Pens

This glitter comes in a hand shaker, so you don't make a mess: Glitter in Shakers

Step 1. Prepare Your Paper

Start with one square sheet of paper. If you only have rectangular paper, trim it into a square before beginning.

Place the paper on your table with the coloured or patterned side facing down if you want that design to show on the outside of the finished butterfly.

Step 2. Fold the Paper in Half Diagonally

Take one corner and fold it across to the opposite corner so that you form a triangle.

Press the fold firmly with your finger to create a crisp crease. Then unfold it again.

Step 3. Fold the Other Diagonal

Now fold the paper along the other diagonal, bringing the opposite two corners together.

Crease it firmly and unfold once more.

You should now see an X shaped crease across your square.

Step 4. Fold the Paper in Half Horizontally

Fold the square in half from top to bottom to make a rectangle.

Press down the fold and then unfold it.

Step 5. Fold the Paper in Half Vertically

Fold the square again, this time from side to side.

Crease well and unfold it.

Now your paper should have several crease lines that will help shape the butterfly.

Step 6. Collapse the Paper into a Triangle

Using the creases you have made, gently push the sides inward so the paper collapses into a smaller triangle shape.

This is a common origami base. Take your time here, as the folds naturally want to fall into place if the creases are firm enough.

Lay the triangle flat with the open ends facing downward.

Step 7. Fold the Bottom Corners Up

Take the right bottom corner of the top layer and fold it upward toward the top point of the triangle.

Repeat with the left bottom corner.

You should now have a shape that begins to resemble a diamond.

Step 8. Turn the Model Over

Carefully flip the folded shape over so the back is facing up.

Keep everything pressed flat as you turn it.

Step 9. Fold the Bottom Point Up

Take the bottom point and fold it upward so that it slightly overlaps the top edge.

This fold helps create the centre of the butterfly.

If a small tip sticks out over the top, that is perfectly fine.

Step 10. Fold the Small Tip Over

If a small point is sticking above the top edge, fold it down over the front to secure the butterfly shape.

Press gently but firmly so it stays in place.

Step 11. Fold the Butterfly in Half

Fold the butterfly shape gently in half down the middle, with the wings together.

Be careful not to crush the folds too much.

Step 12. Shape the Wings

Open the butterfly back up slightly and gently pull the wings outward.

You can adjust them until they look balanced and delicate.

Your origami butterfly is now complete.

Decorating Ideas

Once you have made your butterfly, you can leave it plain or decorate it in different ways.

Draw patterns on the wings with pens
Add glitter for sparkle
Use stickers or gems
Attach several butterflies to string for a hanging decoration
Glue them onto cards, scrapbooks, or gift tags

You can also make butterflies in different sizes and colours for a lovely display.

Tips for Success

Use thin paper for easier folding
Crease each fold firmly for the best result
Take your time with the collapsing step
Practise with plain paper first before using decorative paper

Even if your first butterfly is not perfect, each one gets easier as you go.

Final Thoughts

Origami butterflies are a charming and simple craft that can brighten many different projects. They are inexpensive, peaceful to make, and suitable for both children and adults. Once you learn the basic method, you can make a whole collection in different colours and patterns.

This is the kind of craft that feels both relaxing and rewarding, and it is a lovely way to turn a simple piece of paper into something decorative and elegant.
