How to Make a Simple Paper Flower Garland
A step by step crafting guide
Below is a step by step guide to making your own paper flower garland.
Materials You Will Need:
Coloured paper or patterned scrapbook paper
Needle and thread or string
A small circular object for tracing such as a coin or jar lid
Optional materials
Buttons or beads for the flower centres
Glitter glue or markers for decoration
Step 1. Choose Your Paper
Start by selecting the paper you want to use. Bright colours create a cheerful garland, while pastel colours produce a softer decorative effect.
You can also recycle materials such as:
Old magazines
Scrapbook paper
Wrapping paper
Old book pages
Cut your paper into manageable squares, roughly 10 to 12 centimetres across.
Step 2. Draw Circles
Using a coin, jar lid, or any small round object, draw several circles onto the paper with a pencil.
Each circle will become one flower. Try to draw at least 15 to 20 circles if you want to create a longer garland.
Step 3. Cut Out the Circles
Carefully cut out all of the circles using scissors. Try to keep the edges as smooth as possible.
If you want a fuller looking flower, you can cut multiple circles for each flower and layer them together later.
Step 4. Create the Petals
To turn the circles into flowers, make small cuts around the edge of each circle, cutting inward about one centimetre.
Space the cuts evenly around the circle. Each cut will form a petal.
Once finished, gently curl the petals slightly using your fingers or by rolling them lightly around a pencil. This gives the flowers a more natural shape.
Step 5. Add the Flower Centres
Add a decorative centre to each flower. You can do this in several ways.
Glue a small button in the middle
Stick a small paper circle in the centre
Add a bead or small gem
Draw a centre using coloured markers
This small detail makes the flowers look much more finished and decorative.
Step 6. Layer Flowers for Extra Dimension
For a more decorative effect, glue two or three flower layers together.
Place one flower on top of another, slightly rotating the petals so they do not line up exactly. This creates a fuller, more realistic flower.
Step 7. Prepare the Garland String
Cut a piece of string or thread to the length you want for your garland. Leave extra length on both ends so it can be tied or hung easily.
A typical garland might be between one and two metres long.
Step 8. Attach the Flowers
You can attach the flowers to the string in two ways.
Option one
Thread a needle with your string and gently stitch through the centre of each flower.
Option two
Glue the flowers directly onto the string using craft glue or double sided tape.
Space the flowers evenly along the string.
Step 9. Let Everything Dry
If you used glue, allow the garland to dry completely before hanging it up. This prevents the flowers from slipping or falling off.
Step 10. Hang Your Garland
Your finished garland can be displayed in many places.
Across a window
Along a wall or shelf
Across a fireplace mantle
Over a doorway
As a party decoration
You can also make themed garlands by changing the colours. For example:
Pastels for spring
Bright colours for summer
Orange and brown for autumn
Red, green, and gold for winter holidays
Final Thoughts
Paper flower garlands are a wonderfully simple craft that can be adapted in endless ways. They are inexpensive to make, relaxing to create, and bring a handmade charm to any space.
Try experimenting with different paper textures, colours, and flower shapes to make each garland unique. Once you start making them, you may find it becomes one of your favourite relaxing crafting projects.
