How to Sew a Simple Fabric Tote Bag

A step by step sewing crafting guide

Learning how to sew your own tote bag is a wonderful beginner sewing project. In this tutorial I will show you exactly how to make a simple reusable tote bag using basic sewing techniques.

A fabric tote bag is one of the most useful and beginner friendly sewing projects you can make. It is perfect for carrying groceries, books, craft supplies, or everyday items. Best of all, it requires only basic sewing skills and a small amount of fabric.

This project is ideal for beginners because it mainly involves straight seams and simple construction. Once you learn the basic method, you can make tote bags in many different sizes, fabrics, and colours.

Below is a simple step by step guide to sewing your own reusable fabric tote bag.

Materials You Will Need

Medium weight cotton fabric (about half a metre). I like this bright fabric: Fabric
Matching sewing thread. I recommend this thread for versatility and value: Thread
Sewing machine or needle for hand sewing
Fabric scissors. These are my favourite fabric scissors: Fabric Scissors
Pins or clips. I recommend these clips as they are easier to use: Clips
Measuring tape or ruler. My recommendation is this tape for value: Measuring Tape
Iron. If you want to buy an iron for small sewing projects, try this one: Iron

Optional materials

Lining fabric
Decorative ribbon or trim
Fabric markers or patches for decoration

Step 1. Cut the Fabric Pieces

Cut two rectangles of fabric measuring approximately:

40 cm wide
45 cm tall

These will form the front and back of your tote bag.

Next, cut two long strips of fabric for the handles. Each strip should measure approximately:

8 cm wide
55 cm long

Step 2. Prepare the Handles

Take one handle strip and fold it in half lengthwise with the right sides facing inward.

Press the fold with an iron.

Now open it and fold each long edge toward the centre crease. Press again.

Fold the strip in half once more so the raw edges are hidden inside.

Sew along the long edge to secure the handle.

Repeat the same process with the second handle.

Step 3. Position the Handles

Place one of the main fabric rectangles flat on your table with the right side facing up.

Measure about 8 to 10 cm from each side edge and pin the ends of one handle in place.

The handle ends should sit about 3 cm below the top edge of the bag.

Repeat with the second handle on the other side of the fabric piece.

Step 4. Attach the Handles

Sew a small square or rectangle over each handle end to secure it to the fabric.

You may also sew a small X inside the square for extra strength.

This helps ensure the handles can carry weight without tearing.

Step 5. Join the Bag Pieces

Place the second large fabric rectangle on top of the first piece with the right sides facing together.

Make sure the handles are tucked inside the fabric layers so they do not get caught in the side seams.

Pin around the sides and bottom edges.

Step 6. Sew the Side and Bottom Seams

Using a straight stitch, sew along both side edges and the bottom edge of the bag.

Leave the top edge open.

A seam allowance of about 1 cm works well for this project.

Step 7. Strengthen the Corners (Optional)

To create a flat bottom for your tote bag, pinch each bottom corner so the side seam lines up with the bottom seam.

This creates a triangle shape.

Measure about 4 cm from the tip of the triangle and sew straight across.

Trim the excess fabric.

Repeat on the other corner.

Step 8. Turn the Bag Right Side Out

Turn the bag inside out through the open top.

Push the corners outward gently so the bag forms a neat shape.

Step 9. Hem the Top Edge

Fold the top edge of the bag inward about 1 cm and press with an iron.

Fold it inward again another 2 cm to create a clean hem.

Pin the fold in place.

Sew all the way around the top edge to finish the bag.

Step 10. Final Press

Give your finished tote bag a final press with the iron.

This helps smooth the seams and gives the bag a neat professional look.

Decorating Ideas

Once your tote bag is finished, you can customise it in many creative ways.

Add fabric paint or stamps
Sew on decorative patches - I love these, because you can iron them on: Decorative Patches
Use patterned fabric
Add embroidery designs
Attach lace or ribbon trim

You can also experiment with different sizes to create shopping bags, book bags, or craft supply bags.

Tips for Beginners

Use cotton fabric because it is easy to sew
Press your seams as you work for better results
